Victory for Victor Espinoza – The Triple Bend

Victor Espinoza does it again! The forty-one year old rode to a glorious victory with Centralinteligence, winning the Group 1 Triple Bend Handicap at The Betfair Hollywood Park last week. This seven-furlong race is treated as a “Win & You’re in” long awaited racing event; Breeders’ Cup Challenge at Santa Anita Park.

California, Inglewood hosts this race every year; contested on synthetic dirt cushion track it is open to three years and older. Previously known as the Lakes and Flowers Handicap, it was renamed in 1979 after Frank McMahon’s colt ‘Triple Bend’ who had set a world record time of 1:19.80 for a distance of seven furlongs at the Los Angeles Handicap held at Hollywood Park race track.  The world record however stands in the name of Rich Cream, who had re-set the time at 1:19.40, fractions of a second faster than the previous record holder – Triple Bend in 1980.

This year the track witnessed a new runner Centralinteligence; jockeyed by Victor Espinoza and trained by Ronald W. Ellis. The chestnut gelding has a noticeable pedigree; sired by Smarty Jones and dam Shootforthestars, Centralinteligence shot his way towards the finishing line leaving behind his pacesetter Comma to the Top.

Last year’s sixth place jumped up to the winning position, giving him and his trainer their first Triple Bend win; with the timing of 1:21:57 with Comma to the Top and Morning Lee in the second and third position respectively.

The game of horse racing is highly capricious, and involves a large amount of risks and combinations, however this instability and uncertainty is what draws in more and more crowd! Horse racing has and always will remain one of the most challenging sports in the history of mankind.
